ASUS has established itself as one of the leading smartphone brands with the launch of ZenFone AR in the Indian markets. First showcased at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2017, ZenFone AR is the world's first Tango-enabled and Daydream-ready smartphone, with 8GB RAM. The new ZenFone features the ASUS TriCam system, a three-camera system consisting of a 23MP main camera, motion-tracking camera, and depth-sensing camera. The 8MP front camera of the phone features f/2.0 aperture. It runs on Android 7.0 (Nougat) with ASUS ZenUI 3.0. It is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 CPU, specially optimized for Tango and Daydream. The ZenFone AR has a 5.7-inch WQHD Super AMOLED display and 128GB internal memory. ZenFone AR comes with ASUS SonicMaster 3.0 technology, a five-magnet speaker driven by a powerful NXP smart amplifier. It comes with a premium Asus ZenEar S Headset. ZenFone AR is designed to provide high-quality AR and VR experiences. It also features the desktop-class Qualcomm Adreno 530 graphicsprocessing unit (GPU) to deliver supercharged graphics performance. The ZenFone AR is backed by a 3,300mAh battery pack. Samsung Electronics announced its first half year financial report for January to June, 2017 and posted a 61% gain year-onyear to 23.9 trillion Korean won (about US$21.29 billion) in operational profit. Over 20 financial analysts forecast the operational profit for the whole year to December 2017 will record high at 51 trillion won (US$45.44 billion). For the six month period, it seems that of DRAM took 30%, NAND flash memory 15% taking advantage of short supply of memories for smartphones and servers. On top of that, the company has added the profit of OLED panels for smartphones on the good going of the profit, as it seems to have started shipment of the panels to Apple at the end of May to early June. Some analysts estimate Samsung will ship approximately 80 million to 90 million units during 2017, which will be 170 million units in 2018. The profitability of DRAMs is very high reaching to about 60% in the profitability on sales. Samsung seems to draw a picture to leave Toshiba behind in the flash memory improvement race by investing money earned in the DRAM business.
IDC Japan recently announced that in the first quarter, the sales of augmented reality and virtual reality headsets have increased by 70%. VR headset shipment rose 70% to 2.242 million units while AR devices gained 77% to 38,000 units. The market share of the companies are as follows: Samsung Electronics captured 22%, followed by Sony 19%, HTC from Taiwan 9%. While in the AR devices - Microsoft took 28%, Epson 19% and Intel 16%. In the Japanese market, Epson took 75% of total AR headset shipments and Sony 84% of VR devices' total units. IDC Japan forecasts that the sale of AR & VR headset in 2021 will grow 10x as compared to that in 2016, mainly due to rapid growth of VR terminals with reduced retail prices, focussed on consumer use. The company estimates that VR terminals will take up 73% of the VR and AR combined market. On the other hand, the IDC predicts that the AR sets will be used mainly by business sectors, such as the healthcare, manufacture and product design segments. The business-use AR devices took 68% of all AR shipments in 2016, which will be 83.3% in 2021. In the Japanese market, the combined shipments will be 1.05 million units in 2021 to grow nearly 9 times from about 120,000 units in 2016.
